Session II: Discussion/ Cultural Analysis

A question to consider:

What does it mean to be a friend?

Considering the fact that most of you probably didn't read the first 5 tablets from The Epic of Gilgamesh that I posted, I'm hoping that the questions that will be posted these next few weeks, will spur you on to do so.

Text Analysis:

1. What do we learn about friendship from the Epic of Gilgamesh? What was Gilgamesh like in the beginning of the story?

2. What was Enkidu like when we first met him?

3. What changes Enkidu?

4. What changes Gilgamesh?

Cultural Analysis:

1. What does our culture believe about friendship? Where do we see friendship in our culture today?

2. How have perversions like homosexuality destroyed friendship in our culture?

Friendship by Biblical standards is a relationship where both persons are honest, faithful, and a hater of each other's sin. The two hold one another accountable, and help them move through their hard times with patience and understanding.

Friendship by culture's standards is a relationship that provides benefits for both parties. If the benefit, whether popularity or someone to complain to, is removed, the friendship is destroyed.

And I'm sorry...but I don't even understand Gilgamesh. I tried to...but it was just SO confusing.

I'm actually chewing a bit from a download. Just curious. Friendships..I think what the above poster mentioned is true..only would add that friendship from a Christian perspective would be a commitment. I realize Christian's fail at this too?
