Exodus: Lateral Thinking

Discuss the following questions:

1. Some Christians today believe that the Exodus story shows God is on the side of the poor and oppresses. Does the Exodus story teach us this? In what sense?

2. In the discussion above, we looked at some other Bible stories that were like the story in Exodus. Can you find other "exodus narratives" in the Bible? Look at 1 Samuel 21-2 Samuel 6 and Matthew 1-7.

No. God is not on any side. He is responsible for all things, that is, he brings everything to pass. Those that are oppressed, could be being punished or judged for some sin, or being prepared for something else in God's plan for things. If he so desired, he could remove the people in power or destroy their power, which he did in Exodus, and free the oppressed people. He doesn't have, nor should he. It is because he is merciful, that he spares us from our rightful judging. (One sidenote) The Bible and history clearly show that God loves and protects his people, the Jews, or his children, Christians.

it seems like in the first few senetnces youre calling god and chance the same thing...also if god is as merciful as you say, then how could the oppressed be punished in such a way? be careful that what youre saying is from your own mouth/mind, and not just from something you admire.

That is a very interesting question. Everyone asks it at some point. And if you mean it in a general sense, than I would have to say that God knows what He is doing. If He thinks that putting a nation in bondage will free them in the end, than so be it.

Anon --

I agree with your first sentence. But...

Are you not a merciful parent if you punish your child for disobedience? No. The whole fact that God is good and compassionate enough to choose people to enter His kingdom is mercy in itself.

Does God do that? No. God isn't this all-powerful being who punishes people when they do something wrong. The sins that these people commit are the reason for the trouble they are in. If God was what you're implying him to be, then we would all be dead because he would kill us when we do something wrong, which is often.
